Manik Bandopadhyay was born on 19th May 1908 and died on 3rd December 1956. He wrote many novels and stories in this short period. But, Padma Nodir Majhi is the greatest of all.
In this novel, the main characters are Kuber and Kopila. Kuber is a boatman or fisherman of the river Padma. Kopila is the sister of Kuber’s wife. Kuber and Kopila feel deep love for each other, but this relationship is a crime to the society.
In this novel, Manik Bandopadhyay described the poverty and struggle of the fishermen of Padma river. They live from hand to mouth. Many false belief prevails among them. They suffer from different types of diseases also. Still, they can love people and lead a strong social and family life.
